Nerve pain, or neuropathic pain, is defined as pain whose source is the impairment of the somatosensory system by an illness or lesion. The most common causes of this condition are diabetes, injuries and side effects from chemotherapy or drugs. Despite its long term nature, there are various nerve pain treatments that can be used to alleviate the condition.
Treating Neuropathic Pain
It’s been suggested that the use of anti-inflammatory drugs devoid of steroids could ease pain. If these aren’t sufficient, one could try stronger painkillers, such as anticonvulsant and antidepressant drugs. If there’s another condition involved, such as diabetes, an effective strategy would be to better manage it first to help alleviate the pain. This also works to prevent excessive nerve damage thereafter.
In more complicated cases, an implantable device could be surgically placed by a pain specialist for effective relief. This technique works by electrically stimulating the nerves involved to control the pain. Acupuncture is also another kind of treatment that could work in managing neuropathic pain.
Having sought medical assistance, one would expect some positive results from the administered treatment. But as a patient, there are many other remedies one could seek if the symptoms persist. Physical therapy is one of these options. Besides activating the release of endorphins (natural painkillers), exercise promotes blood flow to the limbs which helps nourish the damaged nerves. One could start off with a short walk each day then gradually increase the distance and pace with time.
Massage and Relaxation
To start off, a warm bath is arguably one of the easiest, least expensive home treatments for nerve pain. Warm water would temporarily enhance blood flow to the legs and also works in releasing stress. To avoid scalding, the temperature of the water should be felt first before one gets in.
Proper foot care also helps, especially where the feet are most affected. Nerve pain results in impaired sensation, which raises the likelihood of injuries and infections. This risk can be reduced by examining the feet daily, wearing comfortable shoes and consulting a podiatrist regularly.
For some patients, neurotic pain tends to worsen during the night. This causes sleep disruption and makes it harder to cope. Embracing good sleeping habits could help here. This involves things like limiting one’s caffeine intake during afternoons, maintaining a constant bedtime that allows sufficient sleep, and keeping distractions out of the bedroom.
Other home nerve pain treatments include rubbing the problematic areas with botanical oils (e.g. geranium and lavender), constant application of capsaicin cream and numbing using over-the-counter anesthetics.
